Yesterday was almost a bust, low level cloud and rain cooled air interfered with the formation of good supercells. With most of the US under cloud cover we had a long drive South to the Texas/Mexico border at Del Rio.

Almost out from under the clouds

Once we hit Del Rio it was a drive West to intercept storms firing up in Mexico and off the Mountains in South Western Texas. The chance of Tornadoes was very low but as we drove higher into the mountains we were treated to a pretty spectacular lightning show. The slow moving storm meant we were within just a few miles of some pretty big strikes.

There were several strikes that were close enough for the lightning and Thunder to happen simultaneously.

We were soon joined by other chasers and a French documentary team.

As the storm moved slowly towards us it was time to get back on the road and chase some emerging storms into the night. With no data connection Todd was working on old school looking at the sky chasing tactics.

They successfully got us to another storm producing some more photogenic lightning.

The stop for the night was in Alpine Texas, presumably named as such due to the fact there are some hills.

No chasing today so sightseeing at Carlsbad and Roswell.
